Designation: Dunes is the newest body of work from Same Waves and Hibernis. This collection of work is the musical storytelling of ‘The Woman in the Dunes,’ a novel by Kobo Abé (Alfred A. Knopf inc., 1964). Anderson and Hughes explore existential expression, musical reinterpretation and manipulation of literature through lyricism and sound, guiding listeners to paint their own landscapes. Dunes is a study in varying degrees of abstraction of sound – moving from form to formless, from narrative to single words and from full composition to a single color on a canvas.
Designations: Dunes was created by Lindsay Anderson & John Hughes.

Algorithm of Desire

11.14.18
Algorithm of Desire is both a testimonial as well as an expression of shared human experiences. Lyrically the songs question the truth behind desire, especially in the age of technology when our wants and needs are algorithmically determined. “Well, after all, what if someday they really do discover the formula for all our desires and whims…that is, the genuine mathematical formula–why, then all at once man might stop desiring, yes, indeed, he probably would. And that’s not all: he would immediately be transformed from a person into an organ stop or something of that sort; because what is man without desire, without will, and without wishes if not a stop in an organ pipe?” (Fyodor Dostoevsky, “Notes from Underground”) These songs place listeners in alternate realities asking them to contemplate the various dimensions of connection while diverting them from a reality where art has lost value and consumerism and technology drive preference.

Hibernis is the synthesis of John Hughes’ evocative soundscapes and Lindsay Anderson’s vocal and melodic contributions. The two bring their unique talents together in a harmonious confluence where the listener is guided on a soothing and often surreal journey. Hibernis began as a meditative process for Hughes, a place of comfort for the mind during a quiet winter stretch. Dwelling inside the sound, he used the music as medicine, striving for a balance of light and dark. Hughes, who had been recording with Anderson on a separate full-length album, played these sketches at the beginning of their sessions and she instantly connected with them. The two began using these meditative pieces as a break from the grid and more production-heavy, song-oriented music that they were making. It served as means to unwind and clear their minds before tackling other work.
Anderson responded vocally to the sketches Hughes brought to the studio, often singing to them on first listen. This process was the antithesis of songwriting itself. In this non-critical, open state, they created in real time, following the natural contours of the music as it revealed itself. It was the sound that would guide the way. Hibernis soon took shape as a defined project for Hughes and Anderson and ultimately paved the way for a fruitful collaboration between the two.
Lindsay Anderson is a co-founder of L’altra and releases work under her own name as well. John Hughes ran the Chicago-based electronic label Hefty Records and has released music under his own name and the alias Slicker. Their full-length album ’Algorithm of Desire’ was released in 2018 (Flau) under the name Same Waves.
